ASTM A494 Grade CY40: Engineering Handbook for Cast Nickel-Chromium Alloy

Engineering Data Sheet for Cast Alloy ASTM A494 Grade CY40

Cast nickel-chromium alloy ASTM A494 Grade CY40 is a structural material developed by EV Group China technologists for application in high-temperature and corrosive environments. This alloy is a cast analog of wrought alloy UNS N06600 (Inconel 600). Nickel (Ni) alloying provides high resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in chloride-containing media, while chromium (Cr) forms a passive oxide film that protects against high-temperature oxidation.

Chemical Composition of ASTM A494 CY40 Alloy, % by mass

The elemental composition of CY40 alloy is strictly regulated by the ASTM A494 standard to achieve a stable austenitic microstructure and optimal casting characteristics. The controlled content of carbon (C) and silicon (Si) ensures the necessary fluidity for producing complex castings, while maintaining a sufficient level of ductility and weldability of the material.

Mechanical Properties of ASTM A494 Gr. CY40 Alloy at 20°C

The standardized mechanical properties are determined by the results of uniaxial tensile tests of standard specimens taken from castings. The alloy demonstrates a balanced ratio of strength properties (tensile strength, yield strength) and ductility properties (elongation), which is a key requirement for pressure vessels and equipment operating under pressure.

Main Physical Properties

The density of CY40 alloy under normal conditions is 8.37 g/cm³. This fundamental parameter is used in engineering calculations to determine the mass of finished products and in modeling hydrodynamic and thermal processes in equipment.

Processability and Weldability

CY40 alloy is readily weldable by most standard methods. To prevent hot cracking and maintain the corrosion resistance of the welded joint, it is recommended to use welding materials with a similar or nickel-enriched composition (for example, ERNiCr-3) and adhere to welding technology for nickel alloys, including control of interpass temperature.
